What is the most sensitive pregnancy test?

The most sensitive pregnancy test is actually a blood HCG test, which detects levels of HCG in the blood shortly after implantation. Many women who have had IVF choose to have a blood test for pregnancy because it can tell them at the earliest possible time if they have become pregnant as a result of the IVF procedure.

Urine pregnancy tests are all about the same. They can detect the presence of HCG in an early morning urine specimen as early as 9-11 days post ovulation or just a day or so after implantation.

There are digital forms of many of these test brands and non-digital tests, which have a high sensitivity for detecting pregnancy at 5-6 days before the missed period.

Pregnancy Test Sensitivity

To make a comparison between these ultra-sensitive pregnancy tests would be difficult. Almost all of them claim to be able to detect the presence of HCG in the urine at about 5-6 days before you expect to miss a period. Sometimes, you can get a faint line even earlier than that but, as every pregnancy has different levels of HCG in the urine, this can lead to false negative tests and the need to redo the test after a couple of days. This is why many of these tests come in packages of two or more test strips so you can retest after a couple of days to see if you are really pregnant. The HCG levels usually double about every 48 hours at this stage in the pregnancy so waiting a couple of days may make all the difference in the world. Be sure to use a first-morning specimen that has the highest concentration of HCG in it.

Which pregnancy test is the most sensitive?

All urine pregnancy tests are basically the same sensitivity and will be 99 percent accurate at the time of the missed period. Some of the generic brands, such as the Dollar Tree pregnancy test and the CVS brand of pregnancy test will be just as sensitive as the expensive brands of pregnancy tests. They are all based on the same technology that detects HCG in the urine at about 5-6 days before the missed period. It is more important to get a fresh pregnancy test that hasn’t expired than it is to be picky about the brand.

Buy a pregnancy test that offers you the opportunity to have more test sticks in each package. That way, if you get a faint line or faint plus sign on the test on one day, you can repeat the test the next day or even the day after that to get a more strongly positive test indicating that the HCG levels are rising and the pregnancy is likely to be healthy. A faint line that stays faint or goes away may mean you have had an early miscarriage and you will likely start having some bleeding soon. Ultra-sensitive pregnancy tests can show early pregnancies that will not go much past the implantation stage and you will have bleeding at about the time of a missed menstrual period. Without the positive pregnancy test prior to the bleeding, you might not have known you were pregnant at all. The bleeding during this type of period tends to be heavier than a regular period but, in most cases, it will pass and you will ovulate again the next cycle.

Are digital pregnancy tests more sensitive?

Digital pregnancy tests tend to be less sensitive than the other types of pregnancy tests but not for the reason you might suspect. You need an absolute level of HCG in the urine for the test to indicate the test is positive. If you are just under that level, the test will read a false negative test even though, if you had used a regular pregnancy test, you might have seen a very faint line. The ability to see even the faintest of lines is what makes these pregnancy tests more sensitive than the digital tests. The digital tests, however, still can tell you that you are pregnant before a missed period but will be positive a day or two after a regular pregnancy test will show you are pregnant.

Digital pregnancy tests are more expensive than the simple pregnancy tests so you will need to shell out more money if you want to take these tests in a serial fashion. It is far better to purchase several cheap tests and then test every day after the expected implantation until the test is definitely not turning into anything positive or until a positive test finally shows up.
