What Happens When You Miss a Period?
Missing a period by even one day can be nerve-wracking. If the period is 3 days late or if it is 4 days late, this can lead you to suspect you might be pregnant unless you are used to having irregular cycles. If you weren’t trying to get pregnant, it can be a time of great stress. Nevertheless, you may want to consider getting a pregnancy test so you know for sure whether or not you are pregnant. If the period is 5 days late or the period is 6 days late, and you always have regular periods, see your doctor about getting a blood pregnancy test or a progesterone level to see if you have even ovulated.
Missed Period and Negative Pregnancy Test
If you have a missed period and a negative pregnancy test, you may be dealing with a false negative pregnancy test or you may be dealing with an irregular menstrual cycle. The only way to know for sure is to see your doctor for further testing and possibly an ultrasound to check the uterine lining or to check for an early pregnancy. If you have no symptoms of pregnancy and only have a white discharge but still no period, there is no danger in waiting another few days. If the period is a week late or perhaps the period is 2 weeks late, something may be amiss in your ovulatory cycle and you may be skipping a month. This is not unusual in women who have hypothyroidism or obesity.
