Implantation Bleeding, Period or Disease?

Did you have unprotected intercourse with your partner a few weeks ago? Are you now experiencing scanty bloody discharge? Are you sure that spotting in your case is not connected with your regular menses? Don’t hurry to tell anybody about pregnancy. Sometimes spotting in the middle of the menstrual cycle can signal a lot of serious problems with your health. Don’t worry, we’ll help you to find out what really happens.

Causes of Bloody Discharge in the Middle of the Cycle

First of all try to cope with your strong positive emotions. Calm down and make sure that pregnancy is possible: count how many days passed after the probable date of conception and recall all the events of the last 2-3 weeks. Spotting usually occurs 3-10 days before menses. Think whether you have experienced an extremely stressful situation or walked any disease recently. Paying no attention to your health problems, even to the smallest ones, can result in a serious and long-term disorder. Femalereproductivesystemis very sensitive to all changes in woman’s organism. It immediately reacts on physical discomfort and emotional instability.

Remember, you can distinguish implantation bleeding from abnormal discharge by several symptoms:

  • implantation bleeding lasts 3 days maximum;
  • menses are heavy, spotting, on the contrary, looks like a drop of red, pink or light-brown blood in the normal vaginal discharge;
  • you can feel some cramps in the lower part of your abdomen.

Illnesseswith Symptoms Similar to Implantation Bleeding

There are two possible variants here: spotting without real pregnancy and bloody discharge during the first trimester of expecting a child (actually implantation bleeding itself happens two-three weeks after conception). The causes of these phenomena may coincide, but mostly they are diametrically opposite.

The roots of abnormal spotting, when pregnancy is excluded:

1. Cervical diseases and inflammations.

Bloody discharge can be a symptom of cervical ectropion, interstitial neoplasia and cervical cancer. Actually, all these diseases can be diagnosed only by a high-qualified specialist during a pelvic exam. Light forms, unlike advanced stages, do not cause bloody spotting.

The abnormal mid-cycle bloody discharge can appear because of the development of one or several uterine fibroids and cervical polyps. Spotting is also treated as a symptom of genital endometriosis and endometritis.

 2. STD.

Sexually transmitted illnesses include ST-infections and venereal diseases. For example, you may experience spotting after having caught gonorrhea. Trace additional signs: burning during urination, fluid-filled blisters in the genital area, swollen genitals, itching, abdomen pains, weird discharge with strong unpleasant odor, painful sexual intercourse, even unexplained headaches and flu-like symptoms. Implantationbleeding does not eliminate the possibility of suffering from STD. If you have any related symptoms, first of all take a HPT and contact your gyn for further information.

3. Hormonal imbalance.

Hormonal imbalance may be caused by taking birth control pills, active hormone therapy, stressful or sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy nutrition, genetic predispositions, tumor growth, etc. You can look more deeply at this theme together with your doctor.

4. Genital traumas.

You may experience bloody discharge the next day after sex, if you used not enough lubricant or tried something new and a little bit brutal. Along with this symptom you will definitely feel vaginal itching or burning. The reason for this is clear, it happens because of the numerous irritations.

Women also experience spotting in the middle of the cycle as a result of stressful situations, hygiene rules neglecting, immune system disorders and intrauterinedevice insertion.

Possible causes of spotting during the first two-three weeks of pregnancy:

1. Placental abnormalities.

Placenta is a special organ, which provides proper nutrition processes between the mother and her child. Its abnormalities include two different diseases. Placenta previa means the improper place of its development. The cervix in such a case is partly covered with its tissues. Placental abruption is a separation of organ from the uterus wall long before the tentative birth date. Both diseases cause bloody discharge as if it was implantationbleeding.

2. Threatened abortion.

It may be caused by different reasons, for example, because of a great stress or embryo abnormalities, rhesus incompatibility of Rh-negative mother and Rh-positive fetus.

 3. Miscarriage.

Miscarriage or missed abortion means a spontaneous premature end of pregnancy. An embryo stops to develop, but remains in the cervix. Medical invasion is needed. During the complete abortion embryo expels from the uterus entirely, causing heavy bleeding.

It may be a miscarriage, if:

  • spotting or light implantation bleeding has transformed into a heavy release of bloody fluid or a large amount of pinkish cervical mucus;
  • you feel severe cramps or sudden acute pains in your stomach;
  • you have noticed weird clumps of bloody tissues and clots in your vaginal discharge.

4. Ectopic pregnancy.

An embryo starts to develop outside the uterine. Such pregnancies occur mostly in tubes, called Fallopian. Sometimes an embryo stops in cervix, abdomen, ovaries. Ectopic pregnancy is a serious problem, without proper treatment it may cause lethal outcome.

5. Molar pregnancy.

Fertilized egg implants into the uterus, but it’s non-viable. You can experience something like implantation bleeding, but it is not a sign of a normal pregnancy. The above mentioned disease is also called the gestational trophoblastic one. Instead of a normally developing fetus during ultrasound examination you see just a mass of grapelike vesicles. There are complete and partial molar pregnancies. The second ones are curable in most cases.

6. Progesterone deficiency.

This reason may be found out and eliminated only by your gyn. Additional blood tests, physical exams and ultrasound may be needed. Your gyn will prescribe you some medicines to remedy the progesterone deficiency and to stop the abnormal spotting.

In general, implantation bleeding itself is not a disease, and it can’t be prevented. The problem is that it’s hard to find out real causes of the middle-cycle spotting. Notice all the characteristics of your discharge, compare them to the ones, mentioned in this and other articles, published on our website, and make a conclusion. If you suspect that something is wrong, contact your gyn immediately. Better safe than sorry. Be careful of your health!
