How Long After Sex Can You Take a Pregnancy Test?

Provided you have sex within two days prior to ovulation, you can test for pregnancy about 9-11 days after conception. Remember that in a young, healthy population, the chances of conception are still only 50 percent per cycle and this number begins to drop after the age of 26. Assuming you conceive, you can take a pregnancy test 9-11 days after ovulation or after conception and may get a positive result if the fertilized embryo has already implanted into the uterine lining.

How Long After IUI Can You Test For Pregnancy?

If you are testing after IUI, after embryo transfer, or after IVF, it is the same as testing after ovulation. The test won’t be positive until implantation has occurred and this can take up to 9-11 days. If you check your urine after intercourse, the test will not be positive and you may not have even conceived yet. Wait until you are closer to missing a period. Even testing after 1 week post-ovulation is too early in almost all cases. After a week, the embryo is still free-floating and is looking for a place to land on the uterine lining and implant.

Should I Wait Missed Period to Test?

Years ago, that was the only choice you had in over the counter pregnancy tests. Now you can test earlier than that and will have a positive test after implantation bleeding has occurred and the HCG has had a chance to leach into the maternal serum. Serum HCG tests are a bit faster than urine tests but not by much. If you had an assisted reproduction procedure, your doctor may offer you a quantitative HCG test to see if the embryo has implanted.

How Long After Sex: Pregnancy Test Myths

A pregnancy has to happen before you can get a positive test. If you just have had sex, you need to wait until fertilization and eventual implantation before you can get a positive test. HCG levels are very different, depending on the pregnancy, so you can get false negative readings if you test too early. There are some homemade pregnancy tests that haven’t been scientifically proven so you can assume these are just myths if you really want to know for sure that you are pregnant.

Pregnancy Test After Miscarriage

The pregnancy test can still be positive for up to a couple of weeks after a miscarriage. It is not recommended to do this unless your doctor wants a quantitative HCG test to make sure the HCG levels are dropping as expected. The same is true after an abortion or after tubal ligation. If you were pregnant, it can take several days or even weeks to show a negative pregnancy test again. As long as things went as suspected, a qualitative, home pregnancy test will not really tell you anything. Your HCG levels after birth are usually negative because HCG drops off after about 10 week’s gestation and can be negative even as you are delivering your child. If you take a pregnancy test after Plan B, the test should be negative. If it isn’t, the Plan B did not work and you have become pregnant anyway. This is not common but it can happen in some cases.

Can you take a pregnancy test a week after sex?

You can try to take a pregnancy test a week after sex but, in most cases, implantation has not occurred yet and the test will be negative. The only time it will be positive is if you thought you had your period after spotting the cycle before and were actually dealing with implantation bleeding. In such cases, you will be pregnant but will be about a month or so further along than you thought you were. This can be cleared up by having an ultrasound of the uterus in early pregnancy, which can give you accurate dates within a few days of your actual due date. If you are ever in doubt as to whether or not a very light menstrual flow means you are having your period, are miscarrying, or have a healthy pregnancy, take a pregnancy test and see your doctor if the test is positive. Your doctor can help you sort out exactly when you became pregnant or can tell you if you have something rare, like an HCG-secreting tumor.

Testing for Pregnancy after HSG test?

An HSG test or hysterosalpingogram can be done to see if the tubes are patent so that you can become pregnant. If the HSG shows clear tubes, you can get pregnant any time you are ovulating and have a statistical chance of becoming pregnant. Some people believe that an HSG test can improve your chances of fertility because the dye injected into the Fallopian tubes can get rid of “debris” that might be blocking the tubes. While this is not the case in the vast majority of HSG tests, it certainly could be possible that the test removed some debris and you can now have a better chance to become pregnant.
