EPT Pregnancy Test

The EPT pregnancy test is one of several pregnancy test kits you can get at any pharmacy to see if you are pregnant. The reviews on this test kit are good and it can detect pregnancy with a fair degree of accuracy, especially if you test on the day of your missed period. If you test any earlier than that, you will carry the chance of having a false negative pregnancy test and will have to retest to see if you are pregnant or not.

How to read the EPT Pregnancy Test

The way you read the pregnancy test depends on whether you buy a digital or non-digital test. The directions will tell you what kind of test you have purchased and what a positive pregnancy test looks like. If you buy the cheaper test, it will show you a reference line in a small window that indicates the test is working. The larger window will give you a reading that shows a blue plus sign if you are pregnant and a blue minus sign if you are not pregnant. Even a faint plus sign is indicative of a pregnancy but probably means you are early in the pregnancy.

The price of a digital test tends to be higher, but it reads easier. It will tell you that you are pregnant by showing a “Pregnant” or “Not Pregnant” depending on the HCG level in the test. Always read the instructions of these types of tests so you don’t make a mistake and waste a perfectly good test.

How to Use EPT Pregnancy Test

The test comes with an absorbent tip that must always be held down. You urinate on the absorbent tip and the urine wicks up into the device. After about 3 minutes, you can read the test. In the cheapest form of the test, you will get a plus sign in the big window if you are pregnant and a minus sign in the big window if you are not pregnant.

The small window is just a reference window that will show a blue line if you are doing the test correctly and it is not an expired or malfunctioning test. The plus sign will be obvious especially if you are far along in the pregnancy and have already missed your period. If you test 5-6 days before your missed period, the plus sign may be very faint but it still means you are pregnant. It just means you are not detecting high levels of HCG in your urine.

How to use EPT Digital Pregnancy Test

The digital EPT Pregnancy test is done in a similar way to the plus/minus test. There is a test stick that has an absorbent end. Remove the cover on the absorbent end and hold the end downward as you urinate on the stick. The urine will wick up into the testing device and you will see a “pregnant” or “Not Pregnant” sign in the test window as early as 1 minute and up to 3 minutes after the urine has wicked up into the stick. The test will say whether or not you are pregnant for up to 24 hours after which the digital reading won’t say anything. This is why it is important to read the test right away and not be worried when the test strip says nothing the next day.

It is best to test on the first-morning specimen when the urine has the highest concentration of HCG in it. If you test later in the day, the HCG levels in the urine will be less concentrated and you run a higher chance of having a false negative test.

HCG levels rise from the time of implantation of the embryo, which is about 9-11 days after ovulation and will remain elevated, peaking at 7-10 weeks. After this, the HCG levels will diminish so that technically you can have a negative pregnancy test when you are at 9 months gestation. Don’t be alarmed because this is a normal occurrence and you are still pregnant. By that time, you will have felt the baby move and will be as big as a house so it will be clear that you are pregnant even if the pregnancy test has become negative again.

Is EPT a good pregnancy test?

There are few differences between the various pregnancy tests on the market and the EPT test is as sensitive and accurate as the other tests on the market. Some may prefer one test over another because some tests have curved handles that make it easier to urinate on and other tests may have wider strips to urinate on so you have a lesser chance of missing when trying to urinate on the test.

On the other hand, the fact that the EPT test shows a plus or minus is helpful to some women who are confused by the two line tests that simply show one line if you are not pregnant and two lines if you are pregnant. There is something unmistakable about the plus sign that helps women know they are definitely pregnant and the EPT test is one of these types of tests.
